The ,Synagogues in Germany’ exhibition was initiated by students of the Darmstadt University of Technology. It developed from the shockwaves the 1994 arson attack on the synagogue in Lübeck sent through the student body. The students began to study the 19th and 20th century architecture of the synagogue and its changing history. They intended not to build a monument to human suffering and cultural loss, but to counteract oblivion with an active knowledge of what had been lost.

The exhibition space mirrors the complexity of the topic and its changing history: The exhibition guides the visitor from the historical developments leading to the night of the pogroms (1933–1938) to the period of escalation (1938) to the reconstruction as a work-in-progress (since 1994) and an architectural history of the synagogue. The exhibition Synagogues in Germany intends to send a signal against the rise of racist or anti-Jewish ideologies. The idea is to use one of the most dif-ficult chapters of German history constructively by making the knowledge of what has been lost accessible to a wide audience.
